Diagram with dual tank solution: All solar heating occurs in the first tank. Solar heated water is drawn into a second conventional hot water heater with usage. One day's solar is the next day's hot water. Any form of backup heater can be substituted for the conventional heated tank in diagram. Three way valve for heat dissipation driven off of AUX 2 output of controller. 1/2" copper or flex stainless lines can be run to a single panel. Use 3/4" runs when installing 2 panels or if run length is more than 100 ft round trip.

Diagram with single tank solution: All solar heating occurs in the lower third of the storage tank by plumbing potable loop draw and return to the cold water dip tube inlet and the tank drain. Lower element is disconnected or both elements are activated at night via a timer. As the bottom of the tank gets above the set point temp of the top of the tank, the entire vessel rises in temperature. During periods of rain or snow, the top element ensures some volume of hot water (35 gal in case of 105 gal storage tank, less in a smaller tank). This solution is not recommended if end user has periodic need for large quantities of hot water. (100 gallon bathtub).
